Former Selector Reveals Sachin Tendulkar’s Surprise Over Team’s Search for Replacement

Sachin Tendulkar Shocked by Selection Committee’s Move

Former chief selector of India, Sandip Patil, recently shared insights about the legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar’s reaction when the selection committee began discussing finding his replacement. After the 2011 Cricket World Cup win, Tendulkar experienced a notable slump in performance that lasted until his retirement in 2013.

The pressure to reassess his position became evident in 2012, particularly after India lost a home series to England, 1–2. In that series, Tendulkar managed a modest 112 runs over six innings, averaging just 18.66, with a top score of 76. Following this tough series, Patil recounted a crucial conversation with Tendulkar about the committee’s views on his future.

Patil noted, “I remember the last day of the India vs England Test in Nagpur in 2012. My fellow selector and I sought permission to meet Sachin. After getting the manager’s go-ahead, I asked him what his plans were. The committee felt it was time to consider his replacement. I understood that it was a hard message, and many criticized me for it, but we didn’t drop him. Eventually, he opted to retire from ODIs first and then Tests.”

He added, “When I told him we felt it was time for a change, he was understandably surprised and asked, ‘Why?’ After our discussion, he called me later to say, ‘Sandy, I’m announcing my retirement.’ It felt unfortunate to be part of such a hard decision, but Ajinkya Rahane stepped in, which proved beneficial for the team.”

Throughout his cricket career, Tendulkar amassed an impressive 18,426 runs in ODIs with an average of 44.83, including 49 centuries. In Test cricket, he scored 15,921 runs over 200 matches with an average of 53.78, finishing with 51 centuries. He bid farewell to the game in November 2013 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, surrounded by a cheering crowd.

In Summary: Sandip Patil’s revelations about Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement reveal the challenges behind the scenes of Indian cricket, highlighting the difficult yet necessary decisions made for the team’s future.
