Three Toronto Synagogues Targeted in Gunfire Attacks
This past weekend, two synagogues in Toronto were struck by gunfire, adding to a troubling series of attacks against Jewish places of worship. Just days earlier, another synagogue was fired upon during the Jewish holiday of Purim. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported in any of these incidents, but the events have left the Jewish community feeling unsafe and increasingly alarmed.
Community leaders are calling for Prime Minister Mark Carney to take more concrete actions rather than just offering words of comfort. In a message posted on social media, Carney described the attacks as a serious violation of the rights of Canadian Jews, emphasizing that they should be able to live and pray safely.
Amid rising tensions, Israel’s National Security Council advised Israelis abroad to stay vigilant, suggesting they avoid public displays of their religious identity and be cautious in areas linked to Judaism. Israeli President Isaac Herzog echoed these sentiments, urging Canada to address the growing wave of antisemitism that has surged since recent conflicts began.
Antisemitic incidents in Canada have notably increased, with reports indicating over 6,200 cases in 2024 — more than double the figures from 2022. Public Safety Canada recently indicated that the majority of hate crimes based on religion were targeted at the Jewish community.
Political figures, including Conservative MP Roman Baber, have criticized Prime Minister Carney and other liberal politicians for allegedly encouraging antisemitism through their statements and actions. Baber highlighted a controversial moment when Carney acknowledged the existence of a “genocide in Gaza,” claiming it contributed to a culture of hate.
Furthermore, Baber remarked that the Prime Minister’s recognition of a Palestinian state coincided distressingly close with the Jewish New Year, which was seen by many as a disregard for Jewish concerns.
Organizations like StopAntisemitism are calling for justice, insisting that those responsible for these attacks face severe legal repercussions. They stress that acts of violence aimed at intimidating the Jewish community will not be tolerated, urging resilience among Jews worldwide.
As the situation unfolds, the Jewish community and allies remain vigilant, advocating for stronger measures against hate.
