Suryakumar Yadav Returns to Ahmedabad for T20 World Cup Final

India’s cricket captain, Suryakumar Yadav, has a special connection with the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. In 2021, he made his T20I debut here, impressively hitting a six on the very first ball he faced from England’s Jofra Archer. Many fans felt his entry into international cricket was long overdue, and they were right about his potential.

However, the same stadium marked a low point in his ODI career during the World Cup final in 2023, where he struggled to contribute to the team’s innings. This time, Yadav returns to the iconic venue, hoping for a brighter outcome as India gears up to face New Zealand in the T20 World Cup final on March 8, 2026.

The match will start at 7 PM IST and can be watched on Star Sports and JioHotstar in India.

Unlike the previous year, India enters this final with some uncertainties. The team has faced challenges during the tournament, with their top-ranked T20I batter and bowler struggling with form. Despite these setbacks, they managed to reach the final after narrowly beating England in a thrilling match at Wankhede Stadium by just 7 runs.

New Zealand’s journey has been similar, as they faced a rocky road through the tournament, almost getting eliminated during the Super 8 stage. By a twist of fate, they secured their semi-final spot, watching closely as Pakistan competed in a decisive match. Fortunately for the Kiwis, the outcome favored them, allowing them to advance.

In a surprising turn, New Zealand overpowered strong favorites South Africa in the semi-final, winning by 9 wickets. Their captain, Mitchell Santner, exuded confidence in the pre-final press conference, hinting at the team’s readiness to surprise their opponents.

Team News: India vs New Zealand

New Zealand has no plans to change their winning combination after their impressive performance against South Africa. With all players fit, they are banking on the abilities of Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, and Rachin Ravindra, who have proven to be effective against India.

Mitchell Santner, taking over from Kane Williamson as captain, is expected to lead the team strategically, though he must learn from past mistakes, particularly regarding bowling lineups in tight situations.

On the other hand, India has some decisions to make. There are questions surrounding whether to play Varun Chakravarthy or Kuldeep Yadav and whether to adjust the batting order by possibly moving Abhishek Sharma.

Match Conditions

The pitch at Ahmedabad will feature mixed soil, which might offer runs but likely not as many as seen in 2023. With hot weather expected, dew may play a significant role, making the toss crucial. Suryakumar Yadav has mentioned a preference to bat first if given the chance.

Key Players to Watch

For India, Sanju Samson stands out as a key player, having delivered remarkable performances throughout the tournament. His recent form has energized the Indian batting lineup, helping them score over 250 runs several times.

Hardik Pandya will also be crucial, known for stepping up during high-pressure situations. Jasprit Bumrah, though not always awarded man-of-the-match titles, has been a consistent performer and could be pivotal in the final.

For New Zealand, Finn Allen’s explosive batting can turn games around. Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra are also valuable players with a history of excelling against India.
