Manchester United Stages Comeback to Defeat Crystal Palace
In an exciting Premier League match on Sunday, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes scored a crucial penalty and set up a dramatic free-kick goal for Benjamin Sesko, leading the team to a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace, who played with ten men. This win propelled United into third place in the league standings.
Under the guidance of interim manager Michael Carrick, United extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches, amassing 51 points from 28 games. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace slipped to 14th place, remaining at 35 points.
Since the dismissal of Ruben Amorim on January 5, United has not lost a match, winning six of their last seven games under Carrick’s leadership. This marks the first time they have reached third position since May 2023.
“It feels like a big result. We had to show character after going behind,” Fernandes shared with Sky Sports. “With many games still to play in the fight for a top-four finish, we must keep pushing for points.”
The match began with Crystal Palace taking control, benefitting from United’s shaky passing. Palace opened the scoring just four minutes in when Maxence Lacroix headed home from a corner, marking the earliest goal United conceded this season. Daniel Munoz had an opportunity to double the lead shortly after, but his shot was saved by United’s goalkeeper, Senne Lammens.
As the first half progressed, United gradually found their rhythm. A header from Sesko nearly equalized but was stopped by Palace’s goalkeeper, Dean Henderson. Fernandes also threatened with a free-kick that Henderson managed to tip over the bar.
United’s Fightback
The tide turned for United in the second half. In the 57th minute, Fernandes converted a penalty after Matheus Cunha was fouled by Lacroix, who was shown a red card following a VAR review.
Just eight minutes later, Sesko completed the turnaround, heading in another free-kick from Fernandes, putting United ahead. They had several chances to extend their lead, with Casemiro’s volley forcing another diving save from Henderson.
In stoppage time, Amad Diallo’s long-range effort was saved, while Joshua Zirkzee had two shots blocked. Kobbie Mainoo also came close with a powerful strike that went just wide.
Carrick reflected on the match, saying, “The main takeaway for us is how we responded after going behind at halftime. We showed great determination and belief.”
Palace pushed hard towards the end, but United held their ground to secure the victory. Glasner, Palace’s coach, noted, “It felt like we could have achieved more. We had a strong first 30 minutes, but after the red card, everything changed too quickly.”
With this win, Manchester United continues their climb in the Premier League as they head into the next set of fixtures.
