Dawson Discusses England’s Strategy Ahead of Clash with Pakistan
England all-rounder Liam Dawson has downplayed the excitement surrounding Pakistan’s spinner Usman Tariq. With a crucial T20 World Cup Super 8 match approaching, Dawson emphasized that the team will focus on tackling the entire Pakistani squad rather than getting fixated on one player.
Tariq has been making headlines lately due to his unusual bowling style and impressive variations. However, Dawson insists that England’s game plan will center around addressing Pakistan as a whole when they face off in Pallekele on Tuesday.
Recently, England bolstered their chances of reaching the semifinals with a strong 51-run win against Sri Lanka. Another victory in the upcoming match would secure them a top-two finish in their Super 8 group, paving the way to the next round.
Despite the win, there are concerns about England’s batting lineup, especially since four of their top five batsmen struggled against spin in their last game. Facing Pakistan’s skilled slow bowlers could pose an even bigger challenge.
Tariq has already stirred some controversy. During the ILT20, Tom Banton hinted that Tariq’s action might not be legitimate after being dismissed by him. Similarly, Australia’s Cameron Green raised eyebrows during a warm-up match against Pakistan but later apologized for his comments.
Though still early in his international career, having played only seven matches since his debut last November, Tariq has made a noticeable impact. England’s captain for limited-overs, Harry Brook, even practiced mimicking Tariq’s bowling style in the nets.
Pakistan’s spin options extend well beyond Tariq, featuring players like Shadab Khan, Abrar Ahmed, Saim Ayub, Salman Agha, and Mohammad Nawaz. This means England will need to prepare thoroughly to counteract their varied bowling attack.
“It’s not all about Tariq,” Dawson stated. “They have a very good team with many dangerous players, and Tariq is just one of them. Our focus will be on analyzing the entire team.”
In the match against Sri Lanka, Dawson and fellow spinners Will Jacks and Adil Rashid took a combined seven wickets, solidifying England’s spin capabilities before facing Pakistan.
England will be playing on a fresh pitch in Pallekele, and Dawson is confident that the team has a well-balanced attack. A final decision is still awaited on Jacob Bethell’s participation due to a cut on his left hand.
Dawson elaborated on the dynamics within the spin department, noting, “We all bring something different to the table. I see my role as more of a defensive spinner, focusing on consistency. Adil has his tricks for taking wickets, while Jacks has been outstanding in utilizing the conditions effectively.”
As a team with a wealth of experience, Dawson believes in the ability of his teammates to execute the game plan effectively, enhancing England’s chances in this crucial encounter.
