England Reveals T20 World Cup Team for Opening Match
England has announced its lineup for the first game of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, and there is a notable change: batter Ben Duckett has been excluded from the team. Duckett had played in the recent T20I against Sri Lanka, where he unfortunately got out for a three-ball duck. In his place, Tom Banton will bat at number four.
The team now boasts a solid middle order with Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, and captain Harry Brook, adding strength and aggression. The batting lineup also features Sam Curran, Will Jacks, and Liam Dawson, who will provide depth and contribute with their bowling. The pace attack will be led by Jofra Archer and Luke Wood, with Adil Rashid serving as the main spinner for the team.
In the tournament, England finds itself in Group C, competing against Italy, Nepal, Scotland, and the West Indies. The team is entering the World Cup in excellent form, having recorded wins over Ireland, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka recently. They also achieved a remarkable 3-0 series victory against Sri Lanka, sending a clear message to their opponents.
Captain Reflects on Recent Challenges
Ahead of the opening match, captain Harry Brook has addressed the tough times he’s faced recently following an incident outside a nightclub in Wellington on October 31. Brook publicly apologized multiple times and was fined £30,000 by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) as part of the disciplinary measures.
“It has been pretty rough, to be honest. But it’s part of the journey. I’ve had support from my teammates, which has been helpful during this tough time,” Brook shared, as reported by ESPN. He added, “I just want to focus on playing cricket for the next 15 to 20 years, as that’s what I love doing.”
England’s Playing XI:
Phil Salt, Jos Buttler, Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Harry Brook (C), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Luke Wood.
