India’s Captain Hints at Ishan Kishan as Opener for T20 World Cup 2026
India’s cricket captain, Suryakumar Yadav, has nearly confirmed that Ishan Kishan will take on the role of opener in their first match of the T20 World Cup 2026 against the USA. Kishan recently impressed everyone with a swift 53 runs off just 20 balls in the warm-up match against South Africa before retiring. Notably, regular opener Sanju Samson did not play in that match, hinting further at Kishan’s upgrade in batting order.
Leading up to the tournament, Suryakumar had high praise for Kishan. He pointed out how Kishan made a strong comeback during the recent series against New Zealand. When asked about Kishan’s position in the World Cup, Suryakumar expressed hope that Kishan would keep up his aggressive style throughout the tournament, indicating that he won’t bat lower than No. 3.
“Absolutely! Just look at his recent performances. He has been remarkable. He played well in domestic cricket as well,” Suryakumar shared in a pre-match briefing. “I expect him to maintain that energy, whether he’s opening or batting at No. 3. I don’t see him batting below that.”
Sanju Samson’s Performance Review Since 2025
Sanju Samson’s performance as an opening batter in recent matches has raised concerns. He ended the New Zealand series with just 46 runs in five innings, with a top score of 24 in the fourth T20I. Since 2025, his numbers as an opener in T20Is have been worrying, with only 134 runs in 11 innings and an average of 12.18, including a highest score of 37.
In contrast, Ishan Kishan has shone brightly, scoring 215 runs from just four innings at an impressive average of 53.75 and a strike rate of 231.18. He played a match-defining innings of 76 (32) in the second T20I and followed it up with a stunning century of 103 off 43 balls in the fifth game.
With Kishan opening in the warm-up fixture and Tilak Varma also making waves with his return from injury, scoring 45 (19), both players seem set to secure their positions in the lineup for the opening match. Meanwhile, Samson is likely to find himself on the bench due to his recent form struggles.
As the T20 World Cup approaches, all eyes will be on how these players perform under pressure.
