East Palestine Launches New Health Research Initiative

EAST PALESTINE — The village is taking significant steps forward in 2026, celebrating the grand opening of the new office for the Train Derailment Health Research Program on Tuesday morning. The event took place at the Way Station, bringing together local media and dignitaries.

Representatives from notable organizations, including the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIH) and several universities, attended the invitation-only ceremony. Local leaders from nearby towns such as New Waterford and Columbiana were also present.

Misti Allison from the East Palestine health program hosted the event, which included speeches from key partners before a ceremonial ribbon-cutting.

Dr. Kyle Walsh, a representative from the NIH, shared his personal connection to the area, mentioning he grew up less than 65 miles away in Geauga County. He emphasized the importance of the five-year research initiative, which was launched with a $10 million grant from the NIH.

This new office aims to connect researchers directly with the community, coordinating studies and helping residents participate in critical research related to health impacts from the 2023 train derailment.

On February 3, 2023, a Norfolk Southern freight train derailed in East Palestine, carrying hazardous materials including vinyl chloride. The incident raised serious concerns about air quality, as residents reported health issues like headaches and respiratory problems.

According to a news release from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the research program will provide local residents with trustworthy information about the health impacts of this environmental disaster. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated that the NIH’s efforts will help individuals understand their health needs through top-quality research.

Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, head of the Ohio Department of Health, spoke at the event, highlighting the significance of the new office in moving forward. He reassured the community of Ohio’s commitment to supporting East Palestine.

Antonio Diaz-Guy, the village manager and a lifelong resident, stressed the need for research to uncover answers. He acknowledged that while the results may take time, this day is a step in the right direction.

East Liverpool City Hospital, which operates the local health clinic, was represented by CEO Stephanie Conn, who reiterated the hospital’s dedication to ensuring community health.

Dr. Erin Haynes from the University of Pittsburgh leads the research team, encouraging local residents to join the study, even if they don’t experience symptoms. The research is open to anyone who lived in East Palestine or participated in the cleanup efforts.

Participants between the ages of 8 and 17 must have a guardian involved as well. Compensation will be provided for those taking part in the surveys and health assessments.

The study will also focus on liver and thyroid functions and the impact on water quality. For more details, residents can access the program’s website.

Local council members and county officials were also in attendance, showing broad support for this important community initiative.
