Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Denounces Turmoil in Turin’s Streets

Violent Clashes Erupt Between Anarchists and Police in Turin, Italy

Violent confrontations unfolded in Turin, Italy, over the weekend when anarchists and other leftist groups turned aggressive against police after authorities evicted squatters from a social center known as Askatasuna. These protests saw demonstrators hurling fireworks, stones, and even firebombs at police.

Footage from the protest depicted masked individuals clashing with officers as red smoke filled the air, with riot police unprepared for the intensity of the situation. The clash followed the eviction of the Askatasuna social center, a building that had been occupied by far-left activists for many years.

In total, 108 officers were reported injured, and protesters engaged in violent actions that included throwing bottles, creating makeshift incendiary devices, and even launching stones using catapults. They set fire to garbage bins and damaged police vehicles, escalating the chaos significantly.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the violence, stating that attacks on police and public safety would not be tolerated. She visited injured officers in the hospital and highlighted the severity of the situation, referring to the aggressors as organized criminals rather than mere protesters.

Dr. Lorenzo Vidino, an expert on extremism, noted that such violence is not a rarity in Turin, a city often linked to anarchist and radical leftist movements. He mentioned a network of European anarchists and activists who frequently participate in these violent protests.

In a follow-up meeting, Meloni addressed the need for increased measures to ensure the safety of police and the public. Analysts have pointed out that Italy has a long history of militant left-wing activism, and they anticipate that while these protests may escalate, the government’s resolve to confront them is strong.

As tensions remain high, the focus will likely shift to how the Italian government plans to handle such organized unrest in the future.
