England Clinches ODI Series Against Sri Lanka with Stunning Centuries

England triumphed over Sri Lanka by 53 runs on Tuesday, securing a 2-1 victory in the one-day international series. The standout performances came from Harry Brook and Joe Root, who both scored impressive centuries, leading England to a strong total of 357-3.

Harry Brook was the star of the show, finishing not out with a remarkable 136 runs from just 66 balls, which included nine sixes and 11 fours. Joe Root also shone, scoring 111 runs off 108 balls, adding to his half-century from the previous ODI.

Sri Lanka’s Pavan Rathnayake contributed significantly to his team’s effort, scoring 121 runs from 115 balls before being the last player dismissed, as Sri Lanka ended their innings at 304 in the 47th over.

“It’s great to see the hard work in the nets pay off,” said Brook. “Having Rooty in the team really helps us perform at our best.”

Spinners played a crucial role in England’s first major ODI series win away from home since 2023. Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, and Adil Rashid combined for six wickets, giving Sri Lanka their first home series loss in five years, since they fell to India in 2021.

In the opening phase, England faced a bit of pressure, finding themselves at 40-2. However, Jacob Bethell and Root steadied the innings, building a partnership of 126 runs for the third wicket. Bethell contributed 65 runs before being dismissed, leaving Root to lead the charge against the Sri Lankan spinners.

Brook’s explosive performance in the final overs was pivotal, resulting in a staggering 88 runs in just five overs, while Root celebrated his 20th ODI century.

Sri Lanka initially got off to a decent start with Pathum Nissanka scoring a brisk 50 from 25 balls, but their momentum slowed after losing early wickets.

Rathnayake, at just 23 years old, showcased great potential with his innings but ultimately fell victim to Sam Curran’s excellent bowling.

Sri Lanka’s skipper, Charith Asalanka, expressed disappointment over the series result but remained optimistic about the emergence of Rathnayake as a valuable player. “It’s tough when you’re expecting spin, and it doesn’t turn,” he added, referring to their strategy of employing multiple spinners.

With the series capped off, England will be looking to build on this success in future matches.
