Sanju Samson Faces Pressure as T20 World Cup Selection Looms
Sanju Samson’s position as India’s T20 opener is now in jeopardy as the team prepares for the third T20I against New Zealand in Guwahati. Ishan Kishan’s impressive form and Tilak Varma’s anticipated return later in the series have created tough choices for the coaching staff as they gear up for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
If Samson doesn’t start performing soon, he risks losing his spot on a team that is starting to solidify its core lineup.
Why is Sanju Samson Under Pressure?
The reason is straightforward: he hasn’t scored enough when it mattered.
Since being named one of the main openers for the T20 World Cup, Samson has struggled to make significant contributions. His highest score in the last four matches was only 37 off 22 deliveries against South Africa in Ahmedabad. This trend has been a recurring issue for him; when responsibilities increase, his performance tends to falter.
As the T20 World Cup, set to take place in India, approaches, the management is looking for clarity in roles and consistency in scoring. Unfortunately, Samson hasn’t stepped up to meet these expectations.
Although he is in good physical condition, he appears rushed at the crease, often opting to attack too soon, which has led to easy dismissals and increasing uncertainty about his place.
Changes Under Coach Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir’s arrival as head coach has given Samson some consistent support, and he had quickly made an impression, scoring three centuries in a short period which hinted that he was comfortable at the international level. For a while, his position seemed secure.
However, this phase has not lasted. Gambhir has made it clear that selection will be based on current performance rather than past achievements, as seen with the exclusions of Shubman Gill from the T20 World Cup squad and Sai Sudharsan from the Test team.
Samson is now being evaluated solely on his on-field contributions.
Who’s Competing for Samson’s Spot?
The strongest competition is coming from within the squad itself.
Ishan Kishan has taken full advantage of his chance to shine after stepping in for the injured Tilak Varma. His composed innings in Raipur bolstered his case as a top-order contender. Adding to his value is his capability as a wicketkeeper.
Tilak Varma is expected to return shortly. When he does, team dynamics may shift, possibly replacing Shreyas Iyer in the middle order. This would leave only one opening spot, leading to a direct competition between Samson and Kishan. Right now, Kishan seems to be in the better position.
Concerns About Samson’s Batting
The main issue isn’t his talent, but rather his decision-making under pressure. He has often tried to dominate right from the beginning instead of taking time to settle in. Former Indian cricketer Kris Srikkanth highlighted this aspect during his podcast, noting that Samson’s sense of desperation could lead him to make poor choices.
In a team where others have learned to pace their innings, Samson’s urgency has become quite noticeable.
What Lies Ahead for Samson?
With the upcoming schedule offering little room for recovery, each innings becomes crucial as India refines its World Cup strategy. The team is no longer experimenting and is sticking to a core group.
At 29, Samson is no longer viewed as a player for the future; he needs to perform now. If Tilak recovers and Kishan keeps scoring, Samson’s opportunities could dwindle quickly. A disappointing series might be enough to sideline him from the XI.
For a player known for his timing and flair, the match in Guwahati may prove to be a pivotal moment in determining whether he secures a lasting spot in India’s T20 plans.
