Bangladesh Withdraws from T20 World Cup 2026 Due to Government Directive
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced that the national team will not participate in the T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to take place in India. BCB director Abdur Razzak explained that this decision came after the government advised against traveling to India due to security concerns.
Initially, Bangladesh sought to play in the tournament but requested that the matches be moved to Sri Lanka for safety reasons. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) assessed the situation and found no significant security threats that would prevent the team from playing in India. Despite their reassurances, the BCB was not satisfied with the ICC’s findings.
“We want to play, but we must follow the government’s decision,” Razzak stated, emphasizing the necessity of government approval for any future tours. He pointed out that this directive applies not only to this event but to all international cricket engagements.
Amzad Hussain, chairman of the BCB Media Committee, explained that the government met following the ICC’s announcement. Despite several discussions and proposals to move the matches, the cabinet concluded that without a venue change, the team could not participate in the World Cup.
In light of Bangladesh’s withdrawal, the ICC has invited Scotland to take their place in the tournament. Cricket Scotland has accepted the invitation and is preparing to head to India, ready to acclimatize to the local conditions before the tournament begins on February 7.
As events unfold, the cricketing community continues to monitor the implications of this decision on Bangladesh cricket and the upcoming World Cup.
