UAE Stops Funding for Citizens to Study in the UK
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has decided to end its financial support for citizens wishing to study in the United Kingdom. This decision comes from worries that students might be radicalized while abroad.
According to reports, the UAE has taken UK universities off its list of institutions that qualify for government scholarships. This change follows tensions over London’s refusal to label the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization. A source involved with the decision mentioned that the UAE wants to prevent its youth from being influenced negatively while on campus.
As a result, Emirati students seeking scholarships for UK studies have had their applications rejected. The UAE will also not recognize degrees from universities not on its accredited list, making UK qualifications less valuable in the UAE.
The UAE government has a strict stance against Islamist movements at home and abroad. Recently, 70 students studying in the UK were flagged for possible enrollment in a government deradicalization program. Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office has emphasized that all forms of extremism are unacceptable and insists on maintaining high safety standards for students in the UK.
UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan has expressed concerns about the UK’s position on the Muslim Brotherhood, and Starmer’s government is still reviewing the situation closely.
