Overview: Russia’s Missile Strike in Ukraine
On Friday, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced it had launched a new intermediate-range ballistic missile, the Oreshnik, targeting Ukraine. Reports indicate that at least four people lost their lives, and over 22 others sustained injuries in the attack, as stated by Ukrainian officials.
Background of the Attack
Moscow claimed the missile strike was a response to an earlier drone attack on President Vladimir Putin’s residence, a claim both Ukraine and former President Donald Trump have contested. This incident unfolded shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned the nation about an impending large-scale offensive from Russia.
Zelenskyy’s Comments
Zelenskyy highlighted that the harsh winter conditions—icy roads and streets—may have been a factor in Russia’s offensive strategy. According to Ukraine’s Air Force, the missile was reported to travel at speeds exceeding 8,000 miles per hour.
The missile impacted several districts in Kyiv, with an emergency medical worker among those who died, as reported by Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration.
Casualties and Damage
Ukraine’s security service noted that five rescue workers were injured while responding to ongoing attacks. One drone crashed onto a multistory building in the Desnyanskyi district, damaging the first two floors of a residential structure. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that the strikes disrupted water and electricity in various parts of Kyiv.
The latest assault also included ground-and-sea-launched missiles aimed at critical infrastructure in Ukraine, particularly impacting the western city of Lviv, as described by its mayor, Andriy Sadoviy.
This ongoing conflict continues to unfold, reminding many of the devastating impacts of war on civilian life and infrastructure.
