Zelenskyy Comments on U.S. Capture of Maduro, Calls for Next Steps

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed reporters in Kyiv on Saturday, sharing his thoughts on the U.S. operation that led to the capture of former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. He remarked that the U.S. “knows what to do next” when asked about the implications of the military action.

The operation took place in the early hours in Caracas, resulting in U.S. forces capturing Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. They were transported to New York to face serious federal charges.

U.S. Military Operation Details

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Dan Caine reported that the mission, named “Operation Absolute Resolve,” involved over 150 aircraft and a coordinated effort among U.S. military and intelligence agencies. He emphasized the operation’s goal was to bring accountability to those threatening global peace.

Maduro faces serious charges, including leading a narco-terrorism conspiracy linked to cocaine trafficking. His wife is also charged in relation to this ongoing conspiracy.

Reaction from Russia

In response, Russia’s Foreign Ministry condemned the capture, labeling it an affront to the sovereignty of Venezuela. They demanded the release of Maduro and his wife.

During a press conference at Mar-a-Lago, President Trump described Maduro’s capture as a bold move but clarified he had no discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the operation. Trump also shared his disapproval of Putin’s actions, highlighting the ongoing violence in Russia.

Continued Tensions in Ukraine

As these events unfold, Zelenskyy pointed out that Russia continues to assault Kyiv with drone and missile strikes. He insisted that Russia shows no real intention to seek peace, instead using negotiations as a tactic to gain time while escalating violence.

Zelenskyy’s comments reflect a broader concern about stability in both Ukraine and Venezuela, stressing the importance of international cooperation against authoritarian regimes.
