Ashoke Pandit Slams Chinese Media Over Distorted Claims on Galwan Clash: “It’s a Sign of Insecurity”

Upcoming Film “Battle of Galwan” Sparks International Debate

The upcoming war drama “Battle of Galwan,” featuring Salman Khan, is making headlines and stirring controversy, particularly in China. State-run Chinese media, notably the Global Times, has criticized the film’s teaser and its portrayal of events, claiming it distorts facts surrounding the 2020 clash in Galwan Valley. Veteran filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, who is also the Chief Advisor for the Federation of Western India Cine Employees, has strongly defended the movie against these claims, suggesting they stem from insecurity rather than artistic concerns.

The buzz began when the teaser was released on December 27, 2025, coinciding with Salman Khan’s 60th birthday. The film, directed by Apoorva Lakhia, intends to depict the intense hand-to-hand combat that took place between Indian and Chinese troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in June 2020.

The Global Times published commentary asserting that “Battle of Galwan” cannot “rewrite history.” They accused the film of being one-sided and criticized what they see as exaggerations concerning the sacrifices made by the Indian Army.

In an interview, Pandit remarked that the reaction from China was expected and would not affect the film’s success in India or globally. He emphasized the importance of highlighting the bravery of Indian soldiers and suggested that China might be feeling insecure about the film’s narrative.

Producer Rahul Mitra also backed this view, stating that filmmakers conduct thorough research and would not misrepresent facts to create a film. He noted that respected figures like Salman Khan and Apoorva Lakhia would not engage in such distortion.

In a separate conversation, Pandit asserted the right to create such a film, explaining that it would reveal China’s actions, particularly regarding its support for Pakistan and the issues it has caused for India. He expressed hope for the film’s success, acknowledging that if it is well-made, it will resonate with audiences.

“Battle of Galwan” draws inspiration from the June 2020 clash that resulted in tragic losses on both sides, including the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers. Salman Khan plays Colonel Bikkumalla Santosh Babu, the commanding officer during the conflict, supported by a cast including Chitrangda Singh, Zeyn Shaw, Ankur Bhatia, and Vipin Bhardwaj. The film is set for theatrical release on April 17, 2026.
