Protests Intensify Across Iran Amid Economic Struggles
Protests erupted in Iran on Monday, with large crowds taking to the streets in cities like Tehran and Mashhad. Demonstrators faced off against security forces, who responded with tear gas as unrest grew, fueled by ongoing strikes and street clashes.
The National Council of Resistance of Iran, an opposition group, noted that protesters marched along major thoroughfares in Tehran, including Jomhouri Street and Naser Khosrow Street. Central areas quickly became sites of conflict, with police and demonstrators engaged in heated confrontations.
Witness accounts indicate that officers used tear gas and batons to disperse crowds in the city center. As they faced increased resistance, protesters shouted “Shameless! Shameless!” and managed to push security forces back in several locations.
Stores across Iran closed in solidarity with the protests, especially in major locations like Tehran’s Grand Bazaar and Lalehzar Street. Many in the crowds voiced strong anti-government sentiments, demanding the ruling clerics to resign.
Videos online showed people inside shopping areas chanting, “Have no fear, we are all together,” while expressing their anger towards security personnel. The ongoing demonstrations highlight deep dissatisfaction with the government amid a struggling economy.
Footage from the bazaar showed protests with slogans like “Death to the dictator,” urging shop owners to shut down their businesses. Some clips captured protesters damaging a car belonging to a government-supporting cleric.
Unrest also spread to Mashhad, where clashes with riot police intensified throughout the day. Eyewitnesses reported that small groups within larger crowds called for political change, extending beyond economic grievances.
The Iranian leadership, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, acknowledged the protests, with Pezeshkian directing his interior minister to engage in dialogue with protesters. International figures, like former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, have voiced support for the demonstrators’ cause, urging them to continue their fight for a better future.
Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo commented on the demonstrations, attributing them to the regime’s corruption and the dire economic situation, which he believes has deprived Iranians of a prosperous life.
Amid growing internal tensions, reports suggested that security forces had been put on high alert in Tehran, making preparations for potential escalations in the protests. The Iranian rial has plunged to record lows against the dollar, with inflation rates soaring above 52%.
