Hamas Expands Forces and Enlists Youth Amid Gaza Truce

Hamas Regroups in Gaza Amid Ceasefire

Hamas is seizing the opportunity provided by the current ceasefire with Israel to strengthen its military capabilities and restructure its leadership. This assessment comes from Professor Kobi Michael, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies.

According to Michael, Hamas has gained increased freedom to operate in Gaza, allowing the group to regroup effectively. “As long as Hamas controls the western part of Gaza, their activities will continue,” he warned.

IDF Soldiers Killed in Ceasefire Violation

As the ceasefire unfolds, the situation remains tense. Recently, two IDF soldiers were killed in what is being described as a serious violation of the truce.

Since Israeli forces pulled back from parts of Gaza in October, Hamas has been active in reestablishing its power. Reports highlight that police forces have returned to the streets, while Hamas fighters have targeted suspected opponents.

A December report revealed that Hamas is actively rebuilding its operations across nearly half of the territory it controls, emphasizing the group’s ongoing commitment to its militant agenda.

Upcoming Leadership Changes

In addition to military activities, Hamas is preparing for a new leadership election following the deaths of prominent figures Ismail Haniyeh and Yahya Sinwar. Senior officials Khalil al-Hayya and Khaled Mashaal are in contention, with Hayya favored due to his popularity in Gaza.

Michael noted that regardless of who becomes the next leader, both candidates are considered to have a more militant stance. Even Mashaal, who often leans politically, supports the continuation of armed resistance.

Recruitment of Teenagers on the Rise

One of the concerning developments is Hamas’s growing success in recruiting teenagers during the ceasefire. Michael explained that the group’s control over western Gaza makes it easier to attract young recruits, as Hamas often provides jobs and income to boys as young as 16.

Many of these teenagers feel a sense of revenge, having lost family members due to the ongoing conflict. Michael compared their environment to neighborhoods in Chicago, where gang dynamics often influence youth choices.

He also noted that Hamas is busy reinforcing its tunnel systems and appointing new governors across Gaza, further solidifying its governance and military readiness.

This ongoing situation raises significant concerns about the future of Gaza and the broader implications for regional stability.
