Zee TV is set to launch a new show called “Pavitra Rishta,” but the announcement has stirred up some controversy. Producer Ektaa R Kapoor has publicly expressed her disappointment about the use of this famous name. The original “Pavitra Rishta” aired in 2009 and featured Ankita Lokhande and the late Sushant Singh Rajput in leading roles. Despite the familiar title, sources say the new show will tell a different story and won’t be directly connected to the classic series.
Ektaa, who produced the original series under her company, Balaji Telefilms, took to social media to voice her concerns about the new title. She strongly criticized the decision, stating, “When you can’t create an IP, you feed on an established one of another creator!” She added that this move reflects poor ethics and an absence of creativity, calling it “intellectual bankruptcy.”
Her post quickly gained traction online, as many felt it tarnished the legacy of the original show. “Pavitra Rishta” became one of the most cherished dramas in Indian television history.
The upcoming version is expected to feature actors Abrar Qazi, known for his role in “Yeh Hai Chahatein,” and Priyanshi Yadav, who has appeared in shows like “Pandya Store.” Directed by Siddharttha Vankara, the show is set to be a love story and will also include an ensemble cast featuring Pallavi Pradhan and Roopa Divetia. It is expected to premiere in February.
The controversy over the title has sparked discussions in the industry about intellectual property and the ethics of reusing established show names. So far, the makers of the new “Pavitra Rishta” have not commented on Ektaa’s objections, leaving fans and industry watchers eagerly awaiting more news.
