Glenn McGrath: England’s Struggles in the Ashes Rooted in Mentality
Glenn McGrath believes England’s struggles in the Ashes series in Australia stem from their mindset, especially after falling behind 0-3. The series has been challenging for Ben Stokes and his team, who could only manage to play 11 days of cricket before Australia secured the urn with a win in the Adelaide Test.
Now, England faces the risk of ending the series with a 0-5 defeat, a situation not seen since 2013. Their last victory in Australia was back in 2011, where they won the series 3-1. McGrath remarked that he didn’t foresee Australia gaining such a commanding lead so quickly.
The former fast bowler highlighted that England’s difficulties are not due to a lack of skill. He pointed out that players like Joe Root and Ben Stokes are significant assets for the team.
“England arrived with high hopes, claiming this was their best chance since 2010-11. Many believed Australia had the weakest team in years. No one anticipated Australia would be 3-0 up after three Tests,” McGrath noted on BBC.
He emphasized that while England deserves criticism, Australia must be credited for their excellent performance.
Furthermore, McGrath stated that England’s long winless streak in Australia isn’t tied to player ability but rather their mentality. He noted that Root and Stokes, two of England’s greatest players, have never won a Test match in Australia. This raises the question of how much their mindset affects their performance.
Challenges Ahead for England
McGrath cautioned that England’s situation won’t improve when they head to Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test. The electrifying atmosphere could make it even tougher for the English players.
“Can the England players shift their mindset to embrace the tour instead of viewing it as a daunting challenge? They’ll have two more chances to break their winless streak in Melbourne and Sydney before the next Ashes series in 2029-30,” he said.
However, he warned that the mental hurdles remain significant. England will have to perform before a crowd of 100,000 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where most fans will support Australia. The Boxing Day Test is a major event in Australian sports, promising a challenging environment for English cricketers.
In fact, England has gone 18 Tests without a win in Australia, suffering 16 losses during this stretch.
