In a major update for Indian cricket, BCCI Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar unveiled the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. A key highlight of his announcement was the decision to leave out star batter Shubman Gill from the team. Speaking to the press, Agarkar mentioned that the choice was based on team ‘combinations’ and the need for a wicketkeeper-batter at the top of the order.
As part of the changes, Axar Patel has been named vice-captain once again. “When selecting a 15-member squad, someone has to be left out, and unfortunately, it’s Gill at this time,” Agarkar noted.
The squad also features Rinku Singh and welcomes back Ishan Kishan, while Suryakumar Yadav will continue as captain. Agarkar stressed that the coaching staff is looking for flexibility and depth in the lineup, focusing on the importance of all-rounders and wrist spinners for the tournament.
