U.S. Dismisses Concerns Over Russia Amid Military Moves in Venezuela

WASHINGTON: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reassured the media on Friday that the United States is not worried about escalating tensions with Russia regarding Venezuela. This statement comes as the Trump administration has increased military presence in the Caribbean.

The U.S. has deployed thousands of troops, along with an aircraft carrier, warships, and fighter jets, to the region. “We’re not concerned about an escalation with Russia, with regards to Venezuela,” Rubio stated.

He acknowledged that while Russia has consistently shown support for the Maduro government in Venezuela, it does not influence how the U.S. views the situation. Recently, Russia’s Foreign Ministry expressed hope that the U.S. wouldn’t make a severe mistake regarding Venezuela, warning about the dangers posed to international shipping by U.S. actions.

The U.S. and Russia maintain a close relationship with Venezuela, but the Trump administration has made it clear that it intends to strengthen its influence in the Western Hemisphere. A strategy document released by Trump’s team suggested reviving the Monroe Doctrine, which historically declared the region to be under U.S. control.

In addition to military deployments, the U.S. has targeted drug vessels in the area, confiscated a sanctioned oil tanker near Venezuela’s coast, and instituted a “blockade” on sanctioned oil tankers in and out of the country. Trump has hinted at potential military strikes inside Venezuela soon, although Democratic lawmakers have criticized the administration for providing limited information about these operations.

Rubio emphasized that recent actions do not necessitate informing Congress or receiving its approval, indicating that the situation has not escalated to the point of war.
