Rising Threat of New Flu Strain This Season
As we enter flu season, concerns are growing over a new strain of the virus that has been identified as a significant risk. Influenza A H3N2, specifically the subclade K variant, is linked to a surge in cases worldwide, including in the United States.
In a recent discussion, Dr. Neil Maniar, a public health expert from Northeastern University in Boston, pointed out the severity of this new strain. He stated, “It’s clear that this variant is quite serious. Reports from various countries indicate severe illness associated with it, and we are already facing a tough flu season.”
This variant appears to bring harsher symptoms than past flu strains, including heightened fever, chills, headaches, fatigue, cough, sore throat, and a runny nose. According to Dr. Maniar, the combination of this strain and lower vaccination rates has created what he calls a “perfect storm” for a severe flu season. The current flu vaccine does not specifically target this variant.
“The importance of vaccination cannot be overstated,” Dr. Maniar said. “However, since the vaccine is not an exact match for this variant, it may contribute to the increased severity of cases we’re witnessing this season. This flu season is starting with lower vaccination rates and a more aggressive strain.”
In addition to the increased cases, Dr. Maniar expressed concerns about potential complications, particularly for unvaccinated individuals who may face more serious symptoms and a higher chance of hospitalization.
To help protect yourself, Dr. Maniar suggests getting vaccinated and practicing good hygiene, such as regular handwashing. The flu spreads easily, and some viruses, like norovirus, can linger on surfaces for up to two weeks.
Additionally, with the holiday season approaching, gatherings and crowded transportation increase the risk of infection. Thus, it’s essential to be cautious during this time.
Dr. Maniar advises that if you’re feeling unwell, especially if you think you might be contagious, do stay home. “That’s the best way to recover quickly and prevent spreading illness to others.”
If you’re unsure about your health status or need guidance, it is wise to consult a healthcare provider. They can evaluate your symptoms and may prescribe treatments that can lessen the severity and duration of your illness.
“It’s crucial for everyone to stay alert and take care of themselves and their families during this flu season,” Dr. Maniar added.
