U.S. Soldiers and Civilian Translator Killed in Syria Ambush
In a tragic incident on Saturday, two members of the Iowa National Guard and an American civilian translator lost their lives in an ambush in Syria. A senior U.S. official confirmed the attack, stating that an ISIS gunman opened fire with an automatic weapon in Palmyra, injuring three additional U.S. soldiers.
President Donald Trump responded to the attack, promising “very serious retaliation” against ISIS. He expressed sorrow over the loss, stating, “We mourn the loss of three American Patriots in Syria.” He also shared that the injured soldiers are doing well.
Initial reports indicate that the attacker was once associated with Syrian government forces before aligning with ISIS. The official clarified that this was not a case of friendly fire, as the shooter was not part of the delegation being escorted by the U.S. and Syrian troops.
Earlier, U.S. Central Command confirmed that the ambush was perpetrated by a lone ISIS gunman. Trump emphasized that such attacks pose a serious threat in parts of Syria that are still unstable.
The incident highlights the ongoing dangers faced by U.S. troops deployed in conflict zones.
