Israel Targets Senior Hamas Figure
On Saturday, Israel announced the elimination of Ra’ad Sa’ad, who was the head of Hamas’ Weapons Production Headquarters and played a key role in the recent attacks on October 7. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Sa’ad was one of the last senior militants in the Gaza Strip and worked closely with Marwan Issa, the deputy head of Hamas’ military wing. The IDF stated that his removal will greatly hinder Hamas’ ability to regain its military strength.
In recent months, Sa’ad had reportedly been attempting to rebuild Hamas’s capabilities and weapons production, actions that breach the U.S.-mediated ceasefire. An IDF official emphasized that Israel retains the right to target those engaged in terrorist activities even under the ceasefire.
Sa’ad had previously served as the commander of the Gaza Brigade and was considered one of the most senior remaining members of Hamas. He was directly involved in the planning of the tragic events on October 7, considered a significant attack for the group.
The IDF, along with the Israeli Security Agency (ISA), shared that Sa’ad was linked to many fatalities among Israeli troops due to explosives manufactured at his unit during the conflict. The joint statement noted that he was a major player in Hamas’ military operations and had been responsible for blatant violations of the ceasefire agreement.
With his departure, Israeli officials believe that Hamas’ operational capacities will be severely affected, indicating a strategic shift in the ongoing conflict.
