Millie Haywood’s Journey: From Struggles to Empowerment Through Fashion

At just 22 years old, Millie Haywood knows the challenges of life all too well. Diagnosed with anorexia at the age of 13, she has faced numerous health battles, including using a feeding tube to aid her nutrition.

“I was really passionate about running; it was what gave my life meaning,” Millie shared during a conversation from her home in Chalford, southern England. “When I could no longer run, I felt lost and like I had no purpose, apart from my family.”

For years, that sense of being out of place loomed over her. “I felt different, but people often told me I wasn’t. They just couldn’t understand what I was going through. I lost my sense of self,” she explained.

Entering the job market in her late teens brought further challenges and frustration. “I went to several interviews and was often turned down right away,” she recalled. “Having a feeding tube made me feel discriminated against, and it really affected my confidence. I wondered what was wrong with me. But it also sparked a desire in me to create something meaningful.”

Everything changed for Millie when she was diagnosed with autism at 21. “That was a turning point. I began to understand and accept who I am. It felt like I’d found my voice at last,” she said.

This newfound clarity motivated her to create something special. Remembering the giant plushies that brought her comfort on tough days, she thought, “I wish I could have that same feeling in a hoodie.” Encouraged by her mother, Millie made a bold decision: “I’m going to design that.”

From her home studio, Millie launched Mentally Unstitched, an online clothing brand offering sensory-friendly hoodies. Each hoodie is crafted to feel like a comforting hug, weighing about two pounds, with oversized hoods perfect for headphones and soft, non-itchy fabric.

“My hoodies really do feel like a hug,” she commented, showcasing her designs, which include fun phrases like “Slay-DHD” and “Rizz Em with the Tism.”

Millie aspires to inspire others through her story and creations, believing that our uniqueness can be a source of strength. “I want my designs to show that what makes you different can be your superpower,” she added.

Her ultimate goal is to develop a full clothing line that marries comfort and style specifically for the neurodivergent community, sewing threads of empowerment into every piece.

“Starting Mentally Unstitched has reignited my passion,” Millie shared, revealing how this journey has become a key part of her healing process.
