Indian Man Sentenced for Child Abuse in the U.S.

In a troubling incident involving the Indian community abroad, a man from Gujarat has received a 10-year prison sentence in the United States for the sexual exploitation of a minor. Kavan Kumar Patel, 27, was found guilty after he admitted to paying traffickers to abuse a young girl while he worked at a hotel.

Patel was convicted on two counts of sex trafficking involving a minor. Upon completing his prison sentence, he will also face five years of supervised release. Additionally, as he was living in the U.S. without a proper visa, there is a possibility he will be deported after serving his time.

The investigation began on January 6, 2025, when police responded to a theft report at an AmericInn hotel in Omaha. During their inquiry, they discovered evidence that suggested sex trafficking was occurring at the hotel. This led to a broader investigation that eventually dismantled the trafficking operation.

Kavan Kumar confessed to stealing money from the hotel’s cash register and using it to finance the abuse of one of two minor girls involved in the case. Authorities later found that two other hotel staff members had also been complicit, paying traffickers for sexual encounters with the minors.

These employees allowed the traffickers and the girls to stay at the hotel for days, during which the traffickers advertised sexual services online and arranged meetings with clients. The girls reported being given very little food and were coerced into participating in the trafficking ring.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers and serious consequences related to human trafficking and exploitation, especially for vulnerable individuals.
