Dutch Authorities Demand Long Sentences for Family Members in Violent Case
Dutch prosecutors have called for serious prison sentences for a father and his two sons accused of drowning a family member over perceived shame brought on by her behavior. They are seeking up to 25 years in prison for them in connection with the tragic death of 18-year-old Ryan Al Najjar.
Ryan’s body was discovered on May 28, 2024, in a lake near Joure, six days after she went missing. Officials arrested her 53-year-old father, Khaled, and her two brothers, Mohamed and Muhanad, aged 22 and 24, shortly after. According to prosecutors, the incident likely took place on May 22.
The Public Prosecution Service stated, “They saw Ryan as a burden that had to be removed,” highlighting the tragic consequences of her desire to live freely as a young woman.
Authorities shared that the family, characterized as having strict Islamic views, believed Ryan’s behavior was too “Western.” Ryan had allegedly faced backlash for refusing to wear a headscarf in public.
Prosecutors revealed that a TikTok video of Ryan, where she appeared without a headscarf and wearing makeup, marked a turning point. The family felt embarrassed by the video, triggering the events that led to her death.
The brothers reportedly convinced Ryan to accompany them to a secluded area, where they were joined by their father. Tragically, it was there that they allegedly killed her.
Evidence indicates that Ryan suffered both strangulation and drowning, with tape used to bind her. Khaled’s DNA was found under her nails, suggesting he was present during the horrific incident.
After the alleged crime, Khaled fled to Syria, leaving his sons to face the consequences. The Public Prosecution Service denounced this as a cowardly act.
While the court is set to deliver its verdict on January 5, prosecutors are recommending a 25-year sentence for Khaled and 20 years for each of his sons. Authorities have noted complications in extraditing Khaled, as he remarried in Syria after the incident.
This case has highlighted deep cultural conflicts and the extreme measures some may resort to in the name of tradition.
