AB de Villiers Backs Indian Batters After Series Defeat

Legendary South African cricketer AB de Villiers has come forward to support the Indian batting team following their recent series loss to South Africa. India faced a 0-2 defeat, marking their second Test series loss within a year.

After the disappointing results at home, many are critiquing India’s batting lineup for struggling against quality spinners. However, de Villiers remains optimistic, saying there’s no significant reason to worry. He believes India has many talented players.

“I know it’s tough right now, but when I look at Indian cricket across all formats, I think they will be just fine,” de Villiers shared on Ravichandran Ashwin’s YouTube channel. “They may need to rediscover their identity, especially with all the recent changes. I expect to see them fighting back. There’s no need to panic; they have plenty of talent and options to explore moving forward.”

Looking ahead, de Villiers feels the upcoming ODI and T20I series will be a breath of fresh air for India after the Test series setback. “It will be exciting for them to shift to ODI and T20 formats. I believe South Africa will find these formats more challenging,” he mentioned. “This loss will sting for a bit, and rightly so, but it doesn’t mean the end. The talent in Indian cricket is immense.”

He also pointed out that the Indian batters might be facing a mental hurdle, even though they possess the skills needed for success on spin-friendly pitches in India. “I don’t see it as a technical issue. Indian players have historically excelled against spin. They don’t need to change their game drastically. It’s more about having confidence and belief. The challenge seems to be psychological rather than technical,” de Villiers added.

Throughout the series, Indian batters struggled, failing to score a century. Washington Sundar was the highest run-scorer for the team with just 124 runs across four innings. Only Ravindra Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored half-centuries while struggling against South African bowlers Marco Jansen and Simon Harmer, the latter named Player of the Series for taking 18 wickets.

India won’t play a Test match for the next eight to nine months and will soon head to Sri Lanka. Led by Shubman Gill, the team needs to quickly regroup and elevate their performance in the longest format to keep their dreams of reaching the World Test Championship final alive.
