Stokes Lifts England After Early Collapse
Brydon Carse shared how Ben Stokes kept the team motivated after England was bowled out for just 172 runs in their first Ashes Test at Perth Stadium. Even though England lost more than a session to play, they bounced back on Day 1 by putting Australia in a difficult position, reducing them to 123 for nine, trailing by 49 runs.
Carse highlighted Stokes’ infectious energy and positivity, as he urged his bowlers to take full advantage of the favorable conditions. He also recognized the impressive performances of Gus Atkinson and Jofra Archer, who consistently pressured the Australian batsmen.
“He always maintains a positive vibe and keeps his messages simple, which has always worked well for the team. Stokesy encouraged us by saying, ‘Let’s hit the wicket hard and make the most of our chances. We’ve got 50 minutes before tea,’ and I thought both Gus and Jofra started excellently. We carried that intensity into the afternoon session and were really relentless as a bowling unit. Ben did well to rotate us efficiently,” Carse remarked after the day’s play.
A Leader’s Impact
Stokes took charge on the field, becoming the first England captain in 43 years to achieve a five-wicket haul in an Ashes Test. He dominated the Australian batsmen, finishing with remarkable figures of 5 wickets for just 23 runs.
“His energy and determination inspire the whole team. Everyone respects him, and he’s an incredible leader. He has been training hard for the past few weeks, and as Ben Duckett mentioned, he’s really in top form right now. We hope that continues throughout the series,” Carse added.
Carse also made his mark with the ball, taking 2 wickets for 45 runs, dismissing Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja. Jofra Archer also picked up two wickets, while Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson did not manage to secure a breakthrough.
