Rafael Nadal Returns to the Court for a Special Reunion

Rafael Nadal is making headlines as he steps back onto the tennis court a year after announcing his retirement from professional play. This time, he isn’t there to compete; instead, he’s sharing meaningful moments with young talent. In a touching message on social media, the legendary 22-time Grand Slam champion posted a video of himself practicing with Alexandra Eala, a rising star and former student from his Rafa Nadal Academy.

Nadal, who played his final match in the 2024 Davis Cup Finals at 38, reflected on his journey in his post, saying, “One year later, it felt great to be back on a tennis court! Next time I will be stronger.” During the practice, the atmosphere was light and filled with joy, as Nadal laughed when Eala landed a powerful forehand past him.

For Eala, now 20 years old, this practice session was particularly meaningful. She moved to Nadal’s academy in Mallorca at 13 and graduated in 2023, quickly making a name for herself on the WTA Tour. In 2025, she shocked the tennis world at the Miami Open by defeating former major winners Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys. She also achieved a significant milestone by reaching the semi-finals after a thrilling match against Iga Swiatek, winning 6–2, 7–5.

Nadal’s support for Eala goes beyond just practice sessions. After her Miami Open success, he took to social media to express his pride, saying, “We are extremely proud of you, Alex. What an incredible tournament! Let’s keep dreaming!” Their friendship grew even stronger when Eala clinched her first WTA125 title in 2025, leading Nadal to send her warm congratulations.

Eala’s career is on the rise as she made history by becoming the first Filipino in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam main-draw match. Earlier this year, the 19-year-old made headlines with a stunning comeback victory over 14th seed Clara Tauson at the US Open, winning 6-3, 2-6, 7-6. She has also achieved her highest WTA ranking yet at No. 50.

Rafael Nadal, an icon in the world of tennis, remains a distinguished figure in the sport’s history, boasting an impressive 92 ATP Tour singles titles, including 22 major titles and a record 14 French Open victories, along with 36 Masters titles and two Olympic gold medals.
