Bangladesh’s Spin Attack Gains Upper Hand Against Ireland on Day One of First Test

Bangladesh’s spinners showcased their skills on the first day of the first Test against Ireland at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. They managed to limit the visitors to 270 for 8 after Ireland had a strong start.

Choosing to bat first on a dry pitch, Ireland looked promising at 150 for 3 just after lunch. Paul Stirling scored 60 runs, while debutant Cade Carmichael contributed 59, forming a solid partnership. However, the Bangladeshi spin trio—Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, and debutant Hasan Murad—began to take control as the pitch offered more turn and grip, leading to a decline in Ireland’s batting.

The day started poorly for Ireland when captain Andy Balbirnie was dismissed for a duck in the very first over, trapped lbw by Hasan Mahmud. Yet, Stirling and Carmichael steadied the innings, with Stirling hitting nine impressive boundaries in his 76-ball innings. Their partnership of 96 runs for the second wicket gave Ireland a strong foundation.

As the innings progressed, Mehidy Hasan Miraz found his stride. He took the vital wicket of Carmichael and later dismissed Harry Tector lbw for just 1 run. He also got Andy McBrine stumped by Litton Das, finishing with impressive figures of 3 for 50 in 23 overs.

Making his Test debut, Hasan Murad also made a significant impact. He picked up the wickets of well-set batsmen Curtis Campher (44) and Lorcan Tucker (41) with his clever bowling. His figures of 2 for 47 in 20 overs showed his potential.

Senior spinner Taijul Islam contributed as well, taking the wicket of Jordan Neill (30), who had been a thorn in Bangladesh’s side during the final session. Fast bowlers Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana each claimed a wicket too.

As Day One came to a close, Barry McCarthy remained unbeaten on 21 as the tail end ensured Ireland crossed the 250 mark. However, Bangladesh’s spinners had turned the match in their favor, setting up an interesting battle for the next few days as the pitch is expected to deteriorate.

Summary of Day 1:

  • Ireland: 270/8 in 90 overs
  • Top Scorers: Paul Stirling 60, Cade Carmichael 59
  • Top Bowlers: Mehidy Hasan Miraz 3/50, Hasan Murad 2/47
