Greg Chappell Warns of Challenges for Australia’s Ageing Batting Line-Up in Ashes 2025-26
Former Australia captain Greg Chappell has expressed concerns about the team’s older batting lineup as they prepare to face England’s fast bowlers in the upcoming Ashes series. The tournament kicks off on November 21 at Optus Stadium in Perth, and at 38, opener Usman Khawaja is the oldest player on the Australian side, with Cameron Green being the only player under 30.
Chappell highlights that the ageing team could struggle against England’s pace attack, especially if bowlers like Jofra Archer and Mark Wood find their stride on Australia’s favorable pitches. England has selected a squad rich in fast bowlers, including Archer, Brydon Carse, Gus Atkinson, and Josh Tongue, gearing up for conditions that favor pace.
In his column for ESPNCricinfo, Chappell noted, “England has invested heavily in fast bowling—a lineup designed to challenge what they see as a fragile batting order. They are prioritizing the health of Archer and Wood, which suggests they will both play in the initial matches before England rotates their bowlers.”
He warned that if the pitch conditions favor quick bowling, Australia may be caught off guard, as very few batters enjoy facing bowlers with consistent speed. Chappell explained, “We prefer facing medium-paced bowlers or spinners, but at this level, you have to adapt. Very few teams have multiple bowlers who can consistently bowl above 140 kilometers per hour. The Australian batting order might be tested if England’s attack hits the mark.”
Concerns for Australian Cricket’s Future
Chappell also raised alarms about the future of Australian cricket, stressing the need for younger players to debut soon. He believes that if several players under 25 do not make their entrance into the team soon, the departure of veteran players such as Khawaja, Steve Smith, and others could lead to a challenging transition.
He said, “We are facing a crucial moment in Australian cricket. This squad is the oldest seen in over 90 years. Even if 35 is the new 30, without some young talent stepping in soon, we may face a tough time when our senior players retire.”
Additionally, Australia will start the Ashes without their captain, Pat Cummins, who will be absent for the first Test. Steve Smith will take over leadership in his stead, while Cummins is anticipated to return for the second Test in Brisbane.
Historically, England has struggled during Ashes series in Australia, failing to win a Test since their last triumph there in the 2010-11 series. They have faced heavy defeats in the past three series, losing by 0-5, 0-4, and 0-4, making it a tall order for Ben Stokes and his team to turn the tables this time around.
