Bikaner: Mother Arrested for Allegedly Strangling Newborn
A tragic incident unfolded in Bikaner, Rajasthan, where a 40-year-old woman has been taken into custody for allegedly strangling her newborn son just hours after his birth. The baby was delivered at a government hospital late Thursday night, as reported by local police.
The mother, identified as Guddi Devi from Ajitsar village, gave birth to a healthy baby boy around 11 PM. However, her elder sister, Maina Devi, lodged a complaint indicating that Guddi was overwhelmed and distressed following the delivery. Maina pointed to severe financial difficulties and the inability to care for another child as key factors in her sister’s mental state.
According to the police, the tragic event is believed to have occurred between 2 AM and 4 AM in the maternity ward, while other family members were asleep. The baby was discovered unresponsive the next morning, with visible marks on his neck. Medical personnel later pronounced him dead.
Maina Devi stated that Guddi had been facing long-term emotional and mental strain. Their family had already been dealing with significant challenges; Guddi’s husband, Tara Chand, is paralyzed and bedridden after suffering a brain hemorrhage.
Hospital staff remarked that the family’s behavior seemed unusual, noting that relatives did not come to take the baby for several hours after birth. They also mentioned that Guddi had not received any medical check-ups or prenatal care during her pregnancy.
Authorities have confirmed through a postmortem that the infant was strangled, resulting in a murder case being filed against Guddi Devi. She is currently receiving medical treatment and will be arrested after her discharge, according to Station House Officer Sukhram Chotia.
