Pro-Israel Student Gathering Disrupted by Protesters in Toronto

Violence Erupts at Pro-Israel Event in Toronto

A pro-Israel gathering in Toronto turned chaotic on Wednesday when anti-Israel activists disrupted the event, leading to injuries and property damage. This incident occurred shortly after Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow received backlash for remarks about the “genocide in Gaza,” which Jewish organizations criticized as potentially heightening local tensions.

The event was organized by Students Supporting Israel at Toronto Metropolitan University and featured talks from Israeli military veterans. For safety reasons, it was moved off-campus at the last minute. However, around 40 masked protesters were able to find the new location and stormed inside, breaking glass and attacking participants.

One speaker, Jonathan Karten, shared his experience of the violence. He had come to discuss his uncle, an Israeli soldier killed by Hamas in 1996. “As soon as we arrived, we were met with around forty protesters—terrorists, if you prefer,” Karten reported. He described how some intruders broke through a glass door, leading to a chaotic scene where attendees had to use tables and chairs to protect themselves until police arrived.

The police confirmed that the protesters entered the venue without permission, damaged property, and created a dangerous atmosphere for attendees. One person sustained injuries from shattered glass, and five individuals were arrested; they are expected to appear in court next January.

It’s noteworthy that while antisemitic incidents are still the most reported hate-related events in Toronto, they have dropped by 41% compared to last year, according to police officials.

Despite the unsettling experience, Karten expressed determination to continue speaking at campuses. “We’re careful, but we refuse to be scared. It’s vital that Jewish and Israeli voices are heard without fear,” he stated.
