Sunil Gavaskar Celebrates Historic Women’s World Cup Win for India
Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary cricketer, has praised India’s Women’s World Cup victory as one of the most significant achievements in the nation’s cricket history. He noted that while some fans might compare this win to the men’s famous triumph in 1983, the women’s team has crafted its own legacy, having reached two finals before their latest success.
On Sunday, Harmanpreet Kaur’s team finally secured the long-awaited Women’s World Cup title by defeating South Africa in an exciting final in Navi Mumbai. After two previous heart-wrenching losses in 2005 and 2017, the Women in Blue have finally claimed the coveted trophy.
In an article for Sportstar, Gavaskar expressed that this victory will significantly impact women’s cricket around the world and inspire young girls to pursue the sport as a viable career option.
“There were attempts to compare this victory to the men’s World Cup win in 1983,” he wrote. “While the men had never made it past the group stages in prior tournaments, the women’s team had already established itself with a strong record, reaching two finals before this incredible win.”
Gavaskar emphasized the importance of this victory in changing the landscape of women’s cricket globally. He believes that established cricketing nations will now recognize the shift in power dynamics.
He also highlighted the role of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), stating that it has been crucial in finding new talent from across India. Since its launch three years ago, the WPL has already helped players like Sree Charani and Kranti Goud shine, showcasing their skills on a larger stage.
“This victory will encourage parents to support their daughters in pursuing cricket, much like how the 1983 win inspired parents of young cricketers to let them play,” Gavaskar pointed out, adding that the WPL is paving the way for a brighter future in women’s cricket.
In addition to celebrating the team’s success, Gavaskar praised Indian head coach Amol Muzumdar, stating that Indian coaches consistently achieve remarkable results. He noted the strong connection between Muzumdar and Harmanpreet, which played a pivotal role in their success.
“The determination shown by the women was inspiring,” he observed. “If I may say so, it reflected the ‘khadoos attitude’ associated with Mumbai cricket. Coach Amol Muzumdar has definitely influenced this resilience, demonstrating incredible strength after facing tough losses.”
Gavaskar concluded by reiterating that true sporting intelligence, rather than fancy degrees, leads to victory. He believes Indian coaches have a unique understanding of the players and the game, which sets them apart.
The victorious Indian women’s team is set to be honored by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Wednesday, following a warm welcome as they arrived in the capital city on Tuesday evening.
