Brief: Mexican Mayor Murdered During Celebration
A mayor in Mexico, known for his strong stance against drug cartels, was tragically shot during a Day of the Dead event this past weekend. Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan, was vocal about his criticism of President Claudia Sheinbaum, accusing her of not taking adequate action against cartel violence in Michoacán State, where Uruapan is located.
In an interview last month, Manzo stressed the need for stronger efforts from the government, stating he didn’t want to become “just another mayor” to fall victim to violence. “I am afraid, but I must face it with courage,” he revealed to local media.
On Saturday night, during a vigil for the Day of the Dead, Manzo was shot multiple times and later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital. Following his death, Mexican Security Minister Omar García Harfuch announced that an investigation into the incident was underway.
At a press conference, Harfuch expressed deep condolences to Manzo’s family and the residents of Uruapan. He assured the community that there would be no leniency for those involved in organized crime.
Manzo had a significant security detail, including officers chosen by him and members of the National Guard. His proactive approach to crime had drawn comparisons to El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, known for his firm stance against gangs. Manzo consistently criticized Sheinbaum’s methods, indicating skepticism about her ability to handle the crisis effectively.
The loss has left the community of Uruapan mourning, as family and friends gathered to honor the memory of their mayor.
