Tragic Avalanche Claims Lives in Nepal
On Monday, a devastating avalanche hit a camp on Mount Yalung Ri in Nepal, resulting in the deaths of five foreign climbers and two Nepali guides, according to officials. Additionally, five others were injured at the base camp, though their identities and nationalities have not been released.
A spokesperson from the State Department confirmed they are aware of the incident and are working to gather more information. They emphasized the agency’s commitment to the safety and security of U.S. citizens abroad and are prepared to offer consular assistance if necessary.
Rescue teams are making their way to the area on foot after bad weather forced a helicopter to turn back. Shailendra Thapa, a spokesperson for Nepal’s Armed Police Force, mentioned that efforts to reach the site would resume Tuesday morning.
Mount Yalung Ri stands at 18,370 feet and is often considered a good starting point for inexperienced climbers. Nepal is home to eight of the world’s 14 tallest peaks, including the famous Mount Everest.
Earlier this month, a South Korean climber tragically lost their life during a severe storm while attempting to summit a mountain just south of Everest.
As autumn arrives, many climbers take the opportunity to tackle smaller peaks before the upcoming rainy and winter months.
