Search Underway for Overboard Crew Member on Viking Star Cruise
A search operation is currently taking place in the Mediterranean Sea after a crew member fell overboard from the Viking Star cruise ship on Monday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 11:31 a.m. local time.
A Viking Cruises spokesperson confirmed the unfortunate event and stated that the ship quickly activated its emergency response protocols. The search for the missing crew member is being conducted in partnership with the Italian Coast Guard.
The Viking Star was on an eight-day cruise that started in Athens, Greece, and was en route to Palermo, Sicily, after visiting Turkey and the island of Crete. During the trip, an announcement was made to passengers that a crew member had gone overboard.
Witnesses onboard described a scene of shock as many passengers rushed to the railings to search the water. One person reportedly exclaimed, “I see someone,” amid the chaos.
While the crew initiated their search efforts by deploying an orange life ring and a smaller flare device into the sea, the ship continued to circle the area where the crew member fell. Reports indicate that the search area was later expanded as the cruise director communicated updates to those onboard.
Currently, details regarding the crew member and the circumstances of the incident remain unclear. The Viking Star has accommodation for approximately 930 passengers and around 500 crew members. After the Sicilian stop, the cruise is slated to head to Naples and then to Civitavecchia, a coastal city near Rome.
The situation continues to develop, and authorities are working diligently to locate the missing crew member.
