Rubio Opposes UNRWA’s Involvement in Gaza Aid During Israel-Hamas Ceasefire

U.S. Official Criticizes UN Agency Amid Gaza Ceasefire

Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Israel shortly after Vice President JD Vance’s departure to Washington. He voiced strong criticism against the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) during discussions about a U.S.-brokered ceasefire.

Rubio expressed doubts about UNRWA’s ability to help deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, stating, “UNRWA is not going to play any role in it… We’ve made it clear we don’t trust them, as they have become closely tied to Hamas.”

In response, UNRWA posted on X, stating its need to operate in Gaza. The agency highlighted its extensive logistical network and the community’s trust in its operations, urging, “Let us work.”

Experts Call for Action Against UNRWA

Experts are urging action to exclude UNRWA from any future peace plan in Gaza. They point to concerns that the agency has links to terrorist organizations, particularly in the aftermath of violent incidents.

Since a ceasefire deal was reached on October 17, 2023, the U.S. Central Command opened a Civil-Military Coordination Center in southern Israel. This center aims to stabilize Gaza and oversee the ceasefire’s implementation.

During a recent U.N. General Assembly meeting, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres praised UNRWA, stating it plays a crucial role in supporting peace and stability in the region.

U.S. Military Oversee New Peace Deal Phase

Following the tragic events of October 7, 2023, both the U.S. and Israel have taken a firm stance against UNRWA. President Donald Trump emphasized that the U.S. would not fund the agency due to alleged ties between its staff and groups labeled as terrorist organizations.

In April 2025, the International Court of Justice called for collaboration between Israel and UNRWA, but the U.S. supported Israel’s decision to distance itself from the agency, questioning its impartiality.

An investigation into UNRWA’s operations revealed some of its staff members may have been involved in the attacks, resulting in the dismissal of several employees. However, there were also findings indicating that many allegations lacked sufficient evidence.

Conclusion

The conflict over UNRWA’s role continues as world leaders navigate the complexities of the Gaza crisis. The situation remains tense, with calls for transparency and accountability growing louder from various sectors.
