The Unseen Struggles of Indian Migrants and Their Impact

The Indian Diaspora: A Growing Influence Amid Challenges

The Indian community living abroad, known as the Indian Diaspora, is the largest in the world. According to the UN World Migration Report 2024, there are about 18 million Indians living outside India, while India’s Ministry of External Affairs estimates this number to be around 35.42 million. Many Indians have reached high positions in politics, administration, and business in their new countries.

During the Covid pandemic, Indian organizations and volunteers, especially from the Sikh community, played a critical role in providing support, which helped strengthen the positive image of Indians globally. A large part of the Indian Diaspora consists of educated professionals and entrepreneurs who have made valuable contributions to the economies of their host countries.

However, stereotypes about their success and cultural differences have contributed to rising xenophobia in the West. Additionally, an increasing number of Indian migrants are from the labor class and enter these countries illegally. This makes it harder for them to blend into the local culture, as negative behaviors from some radical groups can further complicate acceptance.

Currently, much attention is on actions taken by the Trump administration that target migrants. The sight of Indian migrants being expelled from the U.S. and arriving in India under distressing conditions is troubling. This situation affects not only illegal migrants but also legal workers and Green Card holders.

It’s important to understand that the challenges faced by the Indian Diaspora extend beyond the actions of one administration; they are a global issue. Indian communities, both abroad and in India, may need to reassess their priorities and strategies in light of these troubling trends worldwide.
