Australia Escapes Near-Disaster Against Pakistan in Women’s World Cup 2025
Australia’s captain, Alyssa Healy, brushed off the scare her team faced against Pakistan in the Women’s World Cup 2025. In a match held in Colombo, the defending champions found themselves struggling at just 76 runs for the loss of 7 wickets due to some easy dismissals. However, a stellar performance from Beth Mooney, who scored a brilliant century, turned things around for Australia, leading them to a 107-run victory on Wednesday.
After the match, Healy credited Australia’s strong team depth for their resurgence, highlighting their focus on the upcoming challenge against India in Vizag.
“We’ll reflect on today’s game, but we also need to shift our attention to the next match. We have to adapt to a new venue and prepare ourselves accordingly,” Healy stated after the win. She emphasized the talent present throughout the team, saying, “We believe that everyone in our batting order can make a difference.”
Healy also noted, “We often discuss the importance of building partnerships with both bat and ball. We need to improve on that, especially at the top of the order. If we get the chance, we have to make it count with big scores.”
Despite their early struggles, Healy found positives in the match, stating, “There are many lessons we can learn from the games we’ve played thus far, so we won’t dwell too much on our mistakes from tonight.”
The upcoming match against India is highly anticipated, with both teams emerging as strong contenders for the finals. Fans can expect an exciting showdown at the ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium, a venue known for producing high-scoring matches.
Healy acknowledged the significance of studying the conditions, especially since India is set to face South Africa soon. “The atmosphere here could change quickly, with several teams likely keeping a close eye on our match,” she said, adding, “But our main focus remains on our own game.”
Healy praised Mooney for her impressive contribution, which helped Australia reach a total of 221 runs, a score that turned out to be quite challenging for Pakistan. She remarked, “This has to be one of the best innings I’ve seen from her. At one point, we would have been content with 150–160 runs, so scoring over 200 was a significant effort.”
When asked if the conditions surprised them, Healy responded, “Not really. They changed quite a bit from a few days ago and became dry. We didn’t adapt quickly and ended up making similar mistakes. But we’ll learn from this and move forward.”
For Pakistan, this defeat marks their third consecutive loss in the tournament, following earlier matches against India and Bangladesh. After initially performing well, they lost their grip on the game. Pakistan captain Fatima Sana expressed disappointment over the team’s lack of energy and attributed the loss to complacency.
As the tournament progresses, both teams will be looking to bounce back and secure their places in the knockout stages.
