Rescue Efforts Underway as Blizzard Traps Nearly 1,000 on Mount Everest

A sudden and powerful blizzard on the Tibetan side of Mount Everest has trapped around 1,000 trekkers during China’s National Day holiday weekend. Reports indicate that heavy snow and rain began falling on Friday, impacting many campers who sought shelter in the region, particularly on the eastern Kangshung face of Everest at elevations over 13,779 feet.

So far, about 350 individuals have been safely evacuated, with contact made with several hundred others still stranded. The harsh weather has made it difficult for rescuers to reach those affected, as snow has blocked key roads and trails.

Local media outlets, including Reuters, have reported that conditions worsened quickly, leading to the emergency calls for help. One trekker, Chen Geshuang, described the severe cold and wet conditions that increased the risk of hypothermia among stranded climbers. He mentioned that the unpredictable weather this October was unlike anything the guides had ever experienced.

Authorities in Tibet have mobilized local rescue teams and equipment to clear the blocked roads, hoping to reach the remaining trekkers in a phased rescue operation. So far, several hundred evacuated trekkers have been transported to Qudang township.

The blizzard has not only impacted trekkers but has also affected neighboring Nepal, where heavy rains have resulted in landslides and flash floods, causing the deaths of at least 47 people since Friday.

As rescue operations continue, ticket sales and access to the Everest Scenic Area have been paused to ensure the safety of all involved. The outcome of the rescue efforts remains uncertain, but teams are working tirelessly to bring everyone to safety as quickly as they can.
