Pakistan Coach Mike Hesson Urges Players to Stay Focused Ahead of Asia Cup Final

As Pakistan gears up for the Asia Cup 2025 final against India, head coach Mike Hesson has delivered a clear message to his players: concentrate on the game and steer clear of the ongoing controversies surrounding this intense rivalry. This matchup will mark the third meeting between the two teams in this tournament, yet much of the focus recently has been on off-field issues and heated gestures, rather than the cricket itself.

The anticipation surrounding any India-Pakistan match is always high, and this Asia Cup is no exception. However, several incidents have shifted attention away from the actual game. Following Pakistan’s close win over Bangladesh, which secured their spot in the final, Hesson emphasized the importance of keeping a cricket-centric focus.

“We need to focus on cricket. That’s our main goal,” Hesson stated. “People may be talking about other things, but I am focused on the game. There’s always passion in high-pressure situations. We need to concentrate on playing well.”

Tensions and Controversies in the Rivalry

The build-up to the final has seen its share of drama. The tension started with a handshake incident when Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav chose not to shake hands with Pakistan’s captain Salman Ali Agha during the toss in their group-stage match. Following India’s victory, there was noticeable tension as the entire Indian team refrained from post-match handshakes.

The drama continued in their Super 4 game in Dubai, with Pakistan’s Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan making provocative gestures towards Indian fans. The situation escalated further when India lodged an official complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC) concerning the players’ actions.

In response, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) filed its own complaint against Suryakumar Yadav for his remarks during the group-stage win dedicated to the armed forces, expressing solidarity with victims of a recent terror attack.

On September 25, Suryakumar attended a hearing led by match referee Richie Richardson concerning Pakistan’s complaint. A decision is expected soon, ahead of India’s final Super 4 game against Sri Lanka. Similarly, Rauf and Farhan will face hearings regarding their conduct during the match in Dubai.

Despite the ongoing tensions, both teams are focused on the game. Pakistan’s recent win over Bangladesh and India’s earlier victories have set the stage for an exciting final on September 28. Hesson and fans are hopeful that, this time, cricket will be the main attraction.
