Gavaskar Criticizes Pakistan’s Decision to Cancel Press Conference Ahead of India Clash
Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his disappointment over Pakistan’s cancellation of their press conference prior to their high-stakes match against India in the Asia Cup 2025. This marks the second consecutive time that Pakistan has opted out of facing the media, having done the same before their previous game against the UAE.
Following a heavy seven-wicket defeat to India in the group stage, coach Salman Agha and his team have faced increasing pressure. Their choice to bypass the press conference again has raised concerns about potential consequences from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), according to Gavaskar.
“I’m not sure what their reasoning is, but press conferences are a requirement,” Gavaskar stated. “It’s vital for the media to stay connected and informed. Teams should communicate directly instead of relying on rumors. It seems Pakistan has little to say, which is understandable given their recent performance,” he added.
Gavaskar also suggested that the ACC could impose point deductions on teams that fail to participate in mandatory press conferences. He emphasized that the governing body of the ACC would likely investigate the situation.
On a brighter note for the Pakistan team, they have enlisted the help of sports psychologist Dr. Raheel Kareem to uplift their spirits ahead of the crucial match. The atmosphere in the Pakistan camp has been tense following their loss to India, compounded by a controversial incident where Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav did not shake hands with his opponents post-match.
Additionally, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) raised complaints against match referee Andy Pycroft for not addressing the handshake incident. However, their request for Pycroft’s removal was denied by the International Cricket Council (ICC), and he is set to officiate again during the Super 4 clash between India and Pakistan on September 21.
