Tragic Loss for Sri Lankan Cricketer
Dunith Wellalage, the Sri Lankan spinner, faced a heartbreaking loss on Thursday, September 18. His father, Suranga Wellalage, passed away from a heart attack while Dunith was playing in the Asia Cup 2025 match against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi.
Former cricketer and commentator Russell Arnold shared the news during the broadcast, just after Sri Lanka secured their place in the Super 4 round by defeating Afghanistan. Reports from Sri Lankan media confirmed that Dunith received the news of his father’s passing shortly after the team achieved their target of 170 runs.
A poignant moment was captured when the team manager was seen comforting Dunith, offering support in his time of grief. Journalist Damith Weerasinghe shared this photograph, emphasizing the emotional atmosphere in the dressing room.
Arnold remembered Suranga Wellalage as a respected figure in cricket, having captained one of Sri Lanka’s notable school teams. He recalled their school cricket rivalry, mentioning, “He led Prince of Wales College while I was the captain at St Peter’s. It’s truly sad to hear of his passing, and our thoughts are with Dunith and his family.” Arnold expressed hope that this difficult moment would strengthen the team as they move forward.
The Sri Lankan team showed remarkable resilience, demonstrating their skills on the field right after receiving the somber news. They chased down Afghanistan’s score, with Kusal Mendis notching an impressive 74 runs.
In a surprising turn of events, Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi staged a thrilling comeback after being dropped on a low score. He managed to score 19 runs off Dunith’s bowling in a single over, including a stunning five sixes that ultimately cost Dunith 32 runs—marking one of the most significant overs in T20 history for Sri Lankan bowlers.
As the defending champions, Sri Lanka is set to face India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh in the next stage of the tournament, aiming to continue their journey despite the recent loss.
