India and Pakistan are set to face off in their much-anticipated Asia Cup 2025 match on September 14 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. However, this clash has sparked a wave of controversy, with many Indian fans calling for a boycott of the game. Former Indian cricket great and skipper Sunil Gavaskar weighed in on the matter, clarifying that the Indian team is merely following orders from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the government, having no say in the decision to play.
In an exclusive interview, Gavaskar pointed out that players are obligated to follow the directives given by authorities, and that decisions influenced by political issues are made by the BCCI and the government. This match follows recent tensions after India conducted Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist sites in Pakistan in response to the tragic Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives.
Gavaskar stated, “At the end of the day, it’s the government that makes the call. Players and the BCCI have to comply with whatever decision is taken. It doesn’t matter what we personally think; it’s the government’s decision that gets carried out.”
Social media has been buzzing with calls for a boycott, with hashtags like #BoycottIndvsPak trending. Former cricketers, journalists, and various public figures have voiced their opinions, encouraging fans to skip the match.
Despite the historical significance of India-Pakistan match-ups, ticket sales for the Dubai group-stage event have been sluggish. Almost half of the stadium’s capacity remains unsold, even with over ten days having passed since ticket sales began, with prices ranging from 99 USD to luxury packages above 400,000 INR. This hesitance among fans reflects the current mood following recent events and the push for protests.
As the match date draws near, both teams are focused on their performance on the field. India, under captain Suryakumar Yadav, began their Asia Cup journey with a record-breaking T20I chase against the UAE. With wise advice from cricket legend Kapil Dev, the team is reminded to stay focused and “do their job.”
On the other hand, Pakistan, led by Salman Ali Agha, has made a strong start as well, securing an impressive win over Oman, bolstered by the batting prowess of Mohammed Harris and effective spin bowling from Sufiyan Musheem, Faheem Ashraf, and Saim Ayub. With both teams in excellent form, the upcoming match promises to be a thrilling contest, where the players’ on-field execution will take center stage, overshadowing the surrounding controversies.
