Kapil Sharma Faces Controversy Over City Name
Comedian and actor Kapil Sharma is in the spotlight once again. After previous incidents earlier this year, including a gunfire scare outside his restaurant in Canada and some claims about disrespecting the Sikh community, Sharma is now facing scrutiny from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).
MNS leader Ameya Khopkar, who heads the party’s film wing, has issued a strong warning to Sharma regarding his Netflix show, The Great Indian Kapil Show. Khopkar expressed concern over the use of “Bombay” or “Bambai” when referring to Mumbai during the show. He stated that if this continues, there could be significant protests against Sharma.
Khopkar emphasized, “The name of this city is Mumbai. We have observed for a long time that the city is mentioned as Bombay or Bambai on Kapil Sharma’s show. This is not just a complaint; it’s something that angers many of us. Just like other cities are referred to by their correct names, we shouldn’t disrespect our city. Mumbai is where you work, and the people here love your work. Please do not insult them or the city.”
He urged Sharma to correct this mistake and ensure that guests on the show use the name Mumbai moving forward.
This warning comes after a clip from the show went viral, where actress Huma Qureshi referred to the city as “Bombay” while sharing a story about her brother Saqib Saleem. The episode also featured popular actresses Shilpa and Shamita Shetty.
Kapil Sharma is currently hosting the third season of The Great Indian Kapil Show, which started streaming on Netflix on June 21.
