Osaka and Anisimova Shine in US Open Quarterfinals

Naomi Osaka displayed impressive focus during her US Open quarter-final match against Karolina Muchova, ultimately winning in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(3), to secure her spot in the semi-finals. She will be joined by Amanda Anisimova, who caused a stir by defeating second seed Iga Swiatek in a stunning upset.

Muchova, the No. 11 seed from the Czech Republic, was aiming for her third consecutive semi-final appearance at this tournament, but Osaka’s determination proved to be too strong. This match marked Osaka’s first major quarter-final since her victory at the Australian Open in 2021. The former world No. 1 entered this contest on a high note after a solid win over third seed Coco Gauff.

In the first set, both players showcased their serving skills, with Osaka landing 60% of her first serves, while Muchova had a slightly better rate at 83%. They traded games closely until Osaka pulled ahead, needing to fend off much pressure. Despite Muchova’s attempt to turn the tide with an ace, a long return ultimately gave Osaka the first set.

After spending over 10 hours on the court throughout the tournament, Muchova took a medical timeout to have her left thigh taped. Despite this setback, she fought hard and managed to pressure Osaka in the second set, even earning two break points before converting one during a tense game. However, Osaka quickly broke back, showcasing her confidence with a stunning forehand winner.

From that point, Osaka found her rhythm, while Muchova struggled with movement. Maintaining a blend of patience and aggression, Osaka guided the match into a tiebreak, where she clinched the victory. After the match, Osaka expressed her joy: “It feels incredible to be back in the semi-finals here. I had to stay composed against Karolina, knowing she never gives up.”

Anisimova’s Stunning Upset

While Osaka celebrated, Amanda Anisimova delivered a remarkable performance, defeating Swiatek 6-4, 6-3 to reach the semi-finals. For the 23-year-old American, this match was a redemption after being overwhelmingly defeated by Swiatek at Wimbledon just two months prior.

Anisimova came to New York with determination, striking confidently from the baseline and even catching Swiatek off guard with a stunning backhand volley early in the match. She converted four of nine break points and succeeded in 67 of the total 121 points played. Her strong serve included three aces, contrasting with Swiatek’s struggles that included three double faults and four break points against her.

Reflecting on her triumph, Anisimova said, “Playing here feels so special. After Wimbledon, turning it around like this means the world to me. I’ve worked hard, and today proved I can do it.”

Acknowledging her previous defeat, Anisimova shared, “I was slow that day. Today’s victory is the most meaningful for me because I played without fear.”

Swiatek, aiming for her seventh Grand Slam title, admitted that Anisimova had simply outplayed her. “I couldn’t win today playing that way, especially with Amanda being so aggressive,” she said.

As the tournament heats up, all eyes are now set on the upcoming semi-finals featuring both strong athletes.
