8.8 Magnitude Earthquake in Russia Triggers Tsunami in Japan
A massive earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Russia, affecting the Kuril Islands and Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido early Wednesday. The powerful quake led to tsunami warnings being issued, impacting coastal communities on both sides.
Tragic Earthquake in Afghanistan Leaves Hundreds Dead
In a separate incident, an earthquake of 6.0 magnitude hit eastern Afghanistan close to the Pakistan border late Sunday, resulting in at least 250 fatalities and injuring hundreds. The quake was recorded at 11:47 p.m., around 17 miles from the city of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Due to the region’s inaccessibility, the full impact of the disaster is still being assessed. Authorities from the Kunar Disaster Management confirmed the death toll and noted that the number of casualties might rise as rescue efforts continue.
The earthquake, which struck at a shallow depth of only 5 miles, typically causes more destruction. Just after midnight, another quake with a magnitude of 4.5 jolted the same province, raising concerns about further aftershocks.
Afghanistan, especially in the Hindu Kush Mountain range, is prone to earthquakes because of the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
Recent months have seen increased seismic activity in the region, with a deadly 6.3 magnitude earthquake occurring on October 7, 2023, claiming thousands of lives. The local Taliban government estimates fatalities at around 4,000, while the United Nations reports a lower count of approximately 1,500.
